British Values
At Northleaze, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are woven through our curriculum and our spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. They help every child to “Let their Light Shine” by growing into thoughtful, respectful and responsible citizens.
Our children show this through:
- Reflecting on their own beliefs and respecting the views and faiths of others
- Enjoying learning about themselves, others and the wider world
- Using imagination and creativity in their learning
- Recognising right and wrong and respecting the law
- Understanding the impact of their actions
- Exploring moral and ethical issues and appreciating different viewpoints
- Developing social skills and working with people from all backgrounds
- Participating in communities, volunteering and resolving conflicts
- Embracing diversity and celebrating different cultures
- Understanding Britain’s democratic system and its role in shaping society
- Taking part in artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities
- Showing respect and tolerance in local, national and global contexts
At Northleaze, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, mutual respect, and individual liberty. These values are central to helping every child “Let their Light Shine” and grow into responsible, respectful citizens who contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
Democracy
We teach children that their voice matters. Each year, pupils elect representatives to our School Council through a fair voting process. Candidates prepare speeches and share ideas before a secret ballot takes place. The School Council meets regularly to discuss improvements and lead projects, giving pupils real responsibility. Through PSHE lessons and collective worship, children learn about democratic principles and why listening to others is important. This helps them understand that everyone can make a difference.
The Rule of Law
Children learn that rules keep us safe and help communities thrive. At the start of each year, classes create their own charters, agreeing on expectations for a happy learning environment. We explore why laws exist and what happens when they are broken, both in school and in society. Our Golden Rules – Be Ready, Be Safe, Be Kind – set clear boundaries and are reinforced through our Relationships and Behaviour policy. Visits from local police and community members help children see the importance of law in everyday life.
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to make choices and express themselves in a safe, supportive environment. Whether choosing a challenge in class, joining a club, or making decisions about their learning, pupils are taught to take responsibility for their actions. Through PSHE and e-safety lessons, they learn about rights and responsibilities, as well as how to stay safe online and in the wider world. This freedom, guided by respect and care, helps every child shine as an individual.
Mutual Respect
Respect is at the heart of our Christian vision and values. We teach children to value themselves and others, regardless of differences. Respect is explored in collective worship, class discussions, and through our daily interactions. Children learn that everyone has something unique to offer and that kindness and understanding build strong communities. By showing respect, pupils help create a school where everyone feels valued and included.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Although our local area is not culturally diverse, we ensure children experience and appreciate a wide range of beliefs and traditions. Through RE and PSHE lessons, visits, and special events such as Black History Month, pupils learn about different religions and cultures. We welcome visitors from various backgrounds and celebrate diversity through assemblies and themed activities. This helps children understand and respect differences, preparing them for life in a diverse society.
We challenge any opinions or behaviours that go against these values, including extremist views. By living out these principles, our pupils develop the skills and attitudes needed to thrive in modern Britain and to “Let their Light Shine” in all they do.
