Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Northleaze C of E Primary School, we believe that positive mental health and wellbeing are the foundation for a happy, successful and fulfilling life at school and beyond. Guided by our vision ‘Let your Light Shine’, we are committed to promoting good mental health for all our children, staff and families.
We strive to create a nurturing, secure and inclusive school community where every child feels valued, listened to and supported, whatever they may be feeling or facing. Keeping pupils safe — emotionally as well as physically — is always our first priority.
Why Mental Health Matters
The Department for Education recognises the importance of promoting and supporting good mental health in schools. Positive mental health and wellbeing help children and young people to:
- attend school regularly
- engage positively with learning
- develop emotionally and socially
- reach their full potential
At Northleaze, mental health and wellbeing are not seen as stand‑alone concerns, but as part of our whole‑school approach to safeguarding, behaviour, relationships and learning.
How Northleaze Supports Mental Health and Wellbeing
We promote positive mental health and wellbeing by providing:
- a safe, calm and supportive learning environment
- early, targeted support for pupils who may need additional help
- PSHE lessons that explore themes such as emotions, friendships, difference, aspirations, relationships, physical changes and healthy lifestyles
- a cosy nurture den, offering quiet reflection and access to books that support emotional understanding and managing feelings
- trained anti‑bullying ambassadors who help pupils resolve friendship concerns
- whole‑school assemblies rooted in our school values, encouraging kindness, respect and inspiration
- opportunities to raise awareness through events such as Children’s Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Awareness Day, helping pupils recognise their feelings and develop healthy strategies to manage them
Mental health and wellbeing are also closely linked with our safeguarding practices and behaviour expectations across the school.
Safeguarding and Mental Health
Safeguarding encompasses a wide range of areas, including mental health and wellbeing, behaviour, anti‑bullying, online safety and child protection. Across our website you will find information about how we work closely with families, professionals and external agencies to keep children safe.
Our policies can be accessed via the Policies page under Key Information, including our Mental Health and Safeguarding policies.
If you have a question or concern that is not addressed on our website, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or the school office.
Who to Contact if You Have Concerns
We encourage parents and carers to talk openly with us if they have any concerns about their child’s mental health or emotional wellbeing.
You are welcome to speak to:
- your child’s class teacher
- the Headteacher
